The Columbus Dispatch has written an interesting editorial on the importance of Ohio's Hopewell culture and the significance of UNESCO World Heritage for the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks and Serpent Mound.
"Ohio’s ancient earthworks long have been regarded as among the finest surviving examples of ancient culture in North America. Two of the most important places are in line to be considered by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as World Heritage sites — a distinction that would underline their historical importance and likely increase the number of tourists."
